Women Human Rights Defenders
WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.
The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.
Risks and threats targeting WHRDs
WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.
By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:
- Physical assault and death
- Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
- Judicial harassment and criminalization
- Burnout
A collaborative, holistic approach to safety
We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership
- to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
- to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk
We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:
- emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
- documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
- promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
- building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles
Our Actions
We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.

Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to strengthen responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.

Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;

Increasing the visibility and recognition of WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:

Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

Biography
Sara AbuGhazal est une féministe palestinienne vivant à Beyrouth. Elle est Co-fondatrice de Sawt al-Niswa, un collectif qui produit des connaissances à Beyrouth. Elle est co-directrice de The Knowledge Workshop, une organisation féministe basée à Beyrouth qui travaille sur l'histoire orale et l'archivage féministes. Sara est actuellement coordonnatrice régionale de la Regional Coalition for Women Human Rights Defenders in the Middle East and North Africa.
Sara s'efforce de contribuer à la création d'espaces de transformation et de solidarité féministes. Son travail est principalement axé sur la création de mouvements durables dans la région Moyen-Orient et de l'Afrique du Nord Elle est investie dans la production de connaissances, la transformation féministe et la Palestine. Elle publie régulièrement dans sawtalniswa.org et ses œuvres de fiction apparaissent également dans le magazine électronique Romman

Ours report 2021 summary
Today, a complex and evolving network of anti-rights actors is exerting more influence in international and regional spaces as well as domestic politics. Anti-rights actors are entering multilateral spaces (spaces where multiple countries come together for international collaboration) to transform and undermine them from the inside out. They employ a range of persuasive discourses to gain legitimacy, often co-opting the language of rights and justice to hide their true agendas.
This report is the second in a series on human rights trends reports produced by the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). As well as analysis of key anti-rights actors, discourses, strategies, and impacts, the report features inspiring short stories of feminist action, and knowledge-building exercises to help strengthen our collective resistance.
The effect on our rights has already been grave, but this is not a done deal. We can all play a part in resisting anti-rights agendas and reclaiming our rights.

AWID at CSW67: a Portal to Feminist Power
Imagine opening a door which takes you into a conversation with feminist activists in other continents. This portal will transcend the barriers of UN CSW by pushing beyond language barriers, unaffordable travel, unequal protection from COVID19, and racist visa regimes.
This week, we’re putting a virtual spin on CSW by connecting and amplifying feminist activists' voices, to challenge the discriminatory barriers that limit participation and influence. By setting up connecting “portals” in New York City, Nairobi & Bangalore, we'll host a physical-virtual hybrid space for feminists to connect their struggles and build collective power.

Biography
Patience es profesional global en recursos humanos y ha acumulado más de 10 años de experiencia en la gestión de recursos humanos (RRHH) en el sector sin fines de lucro. Anteriormente, trabajó en Mercy Corps como Oficial Global de Recursos Humanos para África, donde brindaba apoyo en todo lo concerniente al ciclo de vida del personal para personas expatriadas en la región de África oriental y meridional, y brindaba orientación técnica en recursos humanos a les encargades de recursos humanos en las oficinas nacionales de la región africana. Antes de sumarse al equipo global de personal, se desempeñaba como Punto Focal Nacional de Recursos Humanos y Salvaguardia, formó parte del equipo de gestión superior encargado de dirigir todos los asuntos de recursos humanos y salvaguardia. Antes de Mercy Corps, dirigió el Departamento de Recursos Humanos y Operaciones de SNV Netherlands Development Organization e integró el equipo de gestión nacional. Asimismo, posee experiencia de consultoría en Recursos Humanos que adquirió mientras estudiaba para su licenciatura en Gestión de Recursos Humanos que terminó con honores. Esta historia es sobre la manera en que un grupo cada vez más diverso de feministas del Pacífico se organizaron a lo largo de los años para asistir a los Foros de AWID, y el modo en que ese proceso lxs transformó en forma personal, como organizaciones y como movimiento a través de lo que aprendieron, descubrieron y experimentaron. Ilustra la importancia de los Foros como espacio que permitió que una región que tiende a ser marginada o ignorada a nivel global pueda construir una presencia sólida en el movimiento feminista, que luego es replicada en otros espacios internacionales de derechos de las mujeres.
