Women Human Rights Defenders
WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.
The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.
Risks and threats targeting WHRDs
WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.
By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:
- Physical assault and death
- Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
- Judicial harassment and criminalization
- Burnout
A collaborative, holistic approach to safety
We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership
- to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
- to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk
We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:
- emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
- documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
- promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
- building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles
Our Actions
We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.

Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to strengthen responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.

Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;

Increasing the visibility and recognition of WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:

Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

Marianne Mesfin Asfaw
Biography
Marianne Mesfin Asfaw est une féministe panafricaine qui se consacre à la justice sociale et à la construction communautaire. Elle est titulaire d'une licence en études de genre et en relations internationales de l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique (UBC) et d'un master en études de genre et de droit de l'Université SOAS de Londres. Auparavant, elle travaillait dans l'administration universitaire et le soutien aux étudiant·e·s internationaux·ales, de même qu’à titre de chercheuse et d’animatrice dans des espaces féministes à but non lucratif. Elle a également travaillé et été bénévole auprès d'organisations non gouvernementales, notamment Plan International, dans des rôles administratifs. Avant d'occuper son poste actuel, elle a travaillé dans le soutien logistique et administratif à l'AWID. Elle est originaire d'Éthiopie, a grandi au Rwanda et est actuellement basée à Tkaronto/Toronto, au Canada. Elle aime lire, voyager et passer du temps avec sa famille et ses ami·e·s. Pendant les mois les plus chauds, on peut la trouver en train de se promener dans des quartiers familiers à la recherche de cafés et de librairies obscurs dans lesquels flâner.

Barbara Allimadi
Barbara Allimadi était une militante politique et des droits humains originaire d’Ouganda. En 2012, elle a coorganisé une manifestation contre l’agression policière télévisée d’Ingrid Turinawe, opposante politique dont le sein a été pressé par un officier de police. Durant la manifestation, Barbara et d’autres activistes se sont déshabillées et n’ont gardé que leur soutien-gorge devant le poste central de police de Kampala. Cet épisode fut par la suite désigné par la tristement célèbre « manifestation en soutien-gorge » en Ouganda.

Diplômée en électronique et en ingénierie des communications de l’Université métropolitaine de Londres, Barbara était ingénieure réseau au Royaume-Uni et une fervente amatrice de musique reggae. Elle retourna en Ouganda en 2007, au moment du décès de sa mère.
En 2019, elle fut désignée Coordonnatrice pour les affaires internationales et la diaspora de l’Alliance for National Transformation (alliance pour la transformation nationale, ANT), un parti politique lancé la même année par un leader d’opposition.

Barbara est décédée le 27 avril 2020.

7 Women Human Rights Defenders from across the South and Southeast Asian region are honored in this year’s Online Tribute. What is the AWID International Forum?
Every three to four years, AWID hosts its flagship international event. It is the world’s largest event that wholeheartedly centers feminist and gender justice movements in all their diversity. It is a global gathering of feminist activists, allied movements, scholars, funders and policymakers. The Forums rotate between different regions and countries in the global South.

Claudia Montserrat Arévalo Alvarado
Biography
Claudia is a feminist psychologist with a Masters degree in Development Equality and Equity. She has been a human rights activist for 30 years, and a women’s rights activist for the last 24.
Claudia works in El Salvador as the co-founder and Executive Director of Asociación Mujeres Transformando. For the past 16 years she has defended labour rights of women working within the textile and garment maquila sector. This includes collaborations to draft legislative bills, public policy proposals and research that aim to improve labour conditions for women workers in this sector. She has worked tirelessly to support organizational strengthening and empowerment of women workers in the textile maquilas and those doing embroidery piece-work from home.
She is an active participant in advocacy efforts at the national, regional and international levels to defend and claim labour rights for the working class in the global South from a feminist, anti-capitalist and anti-patriarchy perspective and class and gender awareness raising. She is a board member with the Spotlight Initiative and its national reference group. She is also part of UN Women’s Civic Society Advisory Group.

While this toolkit is designed to democratize WITM research, there are capacity constraints related to resources and research experience that may affect your organization’s ability use this methodology.
Use the “Ready to Go?” Worksheet to assess your readiness to begin your own WITM research. The more questions you can answer on this worksheet, the more prepared you are to undertake your research.
Trust
Before beginning any research, we recommend that you assess your organization’s connections and trust within your community.
In many contexts, organizations may be hesitant to openly share financial data with others for reasons ranging from concerns about how the information will be used, to fear of funding competition and anxiety over increasing government restrictions on civil society organizations.
As you build relationships and conduct soft outreach in the lead-up to launching your research, ensuring that your objectives are clear will be useful in creating trust. Transparency will allow participants to understand why you are collecting the data and how it will benefit the entire community.
We highly recommend that you ensure data is collected confidentially and shared anonymously. By doing so, participants will be more comfortable sharing sensitive information with you.

Sanyu Awori
Biography
Sanyu es una feminista que reside en Nairobi (Kenia). Ha dedicado los últimos 10 años a apoyar a los movimientos obreros, feministas y por los derechos humanos, promoviendo la rendición de cuentas empresarial, la justicia económica y la justicia de género. Ha trabajado con el Centro de Información sobre Empresas y Derechos Humanos, en International Women’s Rights Action Watch Asia y el Pacífico (IWRAW, Observatorio Internacional de los Derechos de las Mujeres) y la Iniciativa de Derechos Humanos de la Commonwealth. Posee una maestría en Leyes y Derechos Humanos y una licenciatura en Derecho de la Universidad de Nottingham. Sus escritos se han publicado en el Business and Human Rights Journal, Human Rights Law Review, y plataformas como Open Global Rights, Democracia Abierta, entre otras. En sus ratos libres, le gusta caminar por el bosque y perseguir mariposas.
