Women Human Rights Defenders
WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.
The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.
Risks and threats targeting WHRDs
WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.
By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:
- Physical assault and death
- Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
- Judicial harassment and criminalization
- Burnout
A collaborative, holistic approach to safety
We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership
- to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
- to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk
We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:
- emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
- documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
- promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
- building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles
Our Actions
We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.

Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to strengthen responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.

Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;

Increasing the visibility and recognition of WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:

Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

Gloria Chicaiza
Gloria Chicaiza, an Ecuadorian social and environmental activist, was a fervent defender of land and water. She defied the status quo, fighting against a model of development based on extraction and worked tirelessly for ecological justice and the rights of communities affected by mining.
In diverse areas of Ecuador, Gloria was part of resistance actions in favour of protecting the ecosystem. With passion and dedication, Gloria supported the indigenous and environmental movement, its communities and organizations who oppose mining projects and protect their territories and collective life projects. She spoke out, in local and international foras, against the criminalization of dissent and resistance, the pressure and violence being enacted against community activists, in particular, women human rights defenders and in support of community led efforts for food sovereignty and sustainability.
She was the Mining Justice Coordinator at Acción Ecológica, member of the Latin American Network of Women Defenders of the Social and Environmental Rights and a Board member at the Observatory of Mining Conflicts of Latin America.
In October 2010, Gloria was accused by the mining company Curimining / Salazar Resources S.A. (with Headquarters in Vancouver, Canada) of sponsoring an act of terrorism, sabotage and illegal association to commit a crime. Acción Ecológica believed this to be “in retaliation for her work of denouncing the impacts of mining activities in the country.”
In 2014, Gloria supported the coordination of a delegation to the UN COP 20 Dialogue on Climate Change. The group consisted of 25 Indigenous women from Latin America.
Gloria passed away due to complications from a lung transplant on December 28, 2019. She is remembered for her resistance and tireless work.

Inna Michaeli
Inna es una activista y socióloga feminista queer. Posee muchos años de profundo compromiso con las luchas feministas y LGBTQI+, la educación en política y en procesos de organización de y para las mujeres migrantes, así como por la liberación de y la solidaridad con Palestina. Se incorporó a AWID en 2016 y cumplió diferentes funciones, la más reciente como Directora de Programas. Reside en Berlín (Alemania), creció en Haifa (Palestina/Israel), nació en San Petersburgo (Rusia), y ha puesto todo ese recorrido geográfico político y de resistencia a los colonialismos pasados y presentes al servicio del activismo feminista y la solidaridad transnacional.
Inna es autora de Women's Economic Empowerment: Feminism, Neoliberalism, and the State (Empoderamiento económico de las mujeres: Feminismo, neoliberalismo y Estado. Palgrave Macmillan, 2022), basado en la tesis que le valió un doctorado de la Universidad Humboldt de Berlín. Como académica, impartió cursos sobre globalización, producción de conocimientos, identidad y pertenencia. Inna posee una maestría en Estudios Culturales de la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén. Integra la Junta de Jewish Voice for a Just Peace in the Middle East (Voces Judías por una Paz Justa en Medio Oriente, Alemania) y, con anterioridad, fue miembro de la Junta de +972 Advancement of Citizen Journalism (+972 Avance del Periodismo Ciudadano). Antes, Inna trabajó con la Coalición de Mujeres por la Paz y es una apasionada de la movilización de recursos para el activismo de base.

Marianne Mesfin Asfaw est une féministe panafricaine qui se consacre à la justice sociale et à la construction communautaire. Elle est titulaire d'une licence en études de genre et en relations internationales de l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique (UBC) et d'un master en études de genre et de droit de l'Université SOAS de Londres. Auparavant, elle travaillait dans l'administration universitaire et le soutien aux étudiant·e·s internationaux·ales, de même qu’à titre de chercheuse et d’animatrice dans des espaces féministes à but non lucratif. Elle a également travaillé et été bénévole auprès d'organisations non gouvernementales, notamment Plan International, dans des rôles administratifs. Avant d'occuper son poste actuel, elle a travaillé dans le soutien logistique et administratif à l'AWID. Elle est originaire d'Éthiopie, a grandi au Rwanda et est actuellement basée à Tkaronto/Toronto, au Canada. Elle aime lire, voyager et passer du temps avec sa famille et ses ami·e·s. Leah Tumbalang
Leah Tumbalang était une femme lumad de Mindanao, aux Philippines. L’histoire du peuple autochtone Lumad recouvre des générations de résistance à l'exploitation minière à grande échelle par les entreprises, la protection des domaines ancestraux, des ressources et de la culture, et la lutte pour le droit à l'autodétermination.
Leah était une leader lumad, ainsi qu’une dirigeante du Kaugalingong Sistema Igpasasindog tu Lumadnong Ogpaan (Kasilo), une organisation paysanne lumad plaidant contre l'arrivée des sociétés minières à Bukidnon, dans la province de Mindanao. Elle s’est montrée inébranlable dans son activisme antimines, militant avec ferveur contre les effets dévastateurs de l'extraction minière sur l'environnement et les terres des peuples autochtones. Leah était également une organisatrice de la liste du parti Bayan Muna, membre du parti politique de gauche Makabayan.
Depuis près d’une décennie, Leah (ainsi que d’autres membres de Kasilo) recevait des menaces du fait qu'elle codirigeait l'opposition contre le déploiement de groupes paramilitaires soupçonnés d’être soutenus par des intérêts miniers.

Être en première ligne de la résistance implique également souvent d’être la cible de violences et victime de l’impunité. Leah a non seulement reçu de nombreuses menaces de mort, mais elle a été assassinée le 23 août 2019 à Valencia, dans la province de Bukidnon.
Selon un rapport de Global Witness, « les Philippines sont le pays à avoir été le plus touché en chiffre absolu » pour ce qui est des meurtres d’activistes écologistes en 2018.

Claudia Montserrat Arévalo Alvarado
Claudia is a feminist psychologist with a Masters degree in Development Equality and Equity. She has been a human rights activist for 30 years, and a women’s rights activist for the last 24.
Claudia works in El Salvador as the co-founder and Executive Director of Asociación Mujeres Transformando. For the past 16 years she has defended labour rights of women working within the textile and garment maquila sector. This includes collaborations to draft legislative bills, public policy proposals and research that aim to improve labour conditions for women workers in this sector. She has worked tirelessly to support organizational strengthening and empowerment of women workers in the textile maquilas and those doing embroidery piece-work from home.
She is an active participant in advocacy efforts at the national, regional and international levels to defend and claim labour rights for the working class in the global South from a feminist, anti-capitalist and anti-patriarchy perspective and class and gender awareness raising. She is a board member with the Spotlight Initiative and its national reference group. She is also part of UN Women’s Civic Society Advisory Group.

L'exposition #MeToo en Chine a été organisée pour la première fois en 2019 et a effectué une tournée dans 5 villes. L'objectif de l'exposition est de mettre davantage en avant les expériences personnelles des victimes et des activistes et, en prenant part à ces histoires, d'inspirer notre public à se joindre à la lutte. L'exposition est elle-même devenue une partie de la lutte #MeToo; elle a fait face à d’innombrables défis lors de sa tournée à travers la Chine et a même risqué la fermeture à plus d'une occasion.

Paulina Cruz Ruiz
Paulina Cruz Ruiz, from the Rabinal, Baja Verapaz region of Guatemala, was an ancestral Maya Achí (Indigenous) authority and a human rights defender.
She was actively involved in community organizing and resistance, including legal measures against mining projects on Indigenous territory, projects that would severely affect and damage the socio-environmental fabric.
“The extractive industry model promoted by the Guatemalan government and the construction of large-scale development projects on indigenous lands without community consent has been a source of ongoing disputes with resistance movements.” - Minority Rights Group International
Paulina was also part of the March for Dignity, Life and Justice, in which on 1 May 2019 thousands of Guatemalans started a march of eight days against corruption and impunity in the prosecution and assassinations of human rights, peasant and Indigenous leaders and land defenders.
Paulina was murdered on 14 September 2019 near her home in the village of Xococ.
According to the Minority Rights Group International, “one of the major ongoing issues affecting Mayan communities is the increasing activity of the mining industry.”

Gopika es una activista y organizadora de campañas feminista de la India que se desenvuelve en el ámbito de la justicia de género y los derechos humanos. Su experiencia se asienta en el trabajo con mujeres y juventudes diversas en temáticas que incluyen el acceso a la justicia, la violencia sexual y de género, género y sexualidad, la dotación de recursos para el activismo feminista y los derechos laborales. Gopika ha desempeñado funciones de asesoramiento en financiamiento para los movimientos feministas, entre otras entidades, en FRIDA | Fondo de Jóvenes Feministas y Global Resilience Fund (Fondo Global para la Resiliencia) y, anteriormente, estuvo a cargo del programa de AWID Recursos para los Movimientos Feministas. Es una apasionada de la intersección entre el activismo feminista y la práctica creativa, y fue editora y jefa de Prácticas Equitativas para ‘Bystander Anthology’ del grupo de narrativa gráfica de Asia meridional, Kadak Collective.
