Over the past few years, a troubling new trend at the international human rights level is being observed, where discourses on ‘protecting the family’ are being employed to defend violations committed against family members, to bolster and justify impunity, and to restrict equal rights within and to family life.
The campaign to "Protect the Family" is driven by ultra-conservative efforts to impose "traditional" and patriarchal interpretations of the family, and to move rights out of the hands of family members and into the institution of ‘the family’.
“Protection of the Family” efforts stem from:
rising traditionalism,
rising cultural, social and religious conservatism and
sentiment hostile to women’s human rights, sexual rights, child rights and the rights of persons with non-normative gender identities and sexual orientations.
Since 2014, a group of states have been operating as a bloc in human rights spaces under the name “Group of Friends of the Family”, and resolutions on “Protection of the Family” have been successfully passed every year since 2014.
This agenda has spread beyond the Human Rights Council. We have seen regressive language on “the family” being introduced at the Commission on the Status of Women, and attempts made to introduce it in negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our Approach
AWID works with partners and allies to jointly resist “Protection of the Family” and other regressive agendas, and to uphold the universality of human rights.
In response to the increased influence of regressive actors in human rights spaces, AWID joined allies to form the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). OURs is a collaborative project that monitors, analyzes, and shares information on anti-rights initiatives like “Protection of the Family”.
Rights at Risk, the first OURs report, charts a map of the actors making up the global anti-rights lobby, identifies their key discourses and strategies, and the effect they are having on our human rights.
The report outlines “Protection of the Family” as an agenda that has fostered collaboration across a broad range of regressive actors at the UN. It describes it as: “a strategic framework that houses “multiple patriarchal and anti-rights positions, where the framework, in turn, aims to justify and institutionalize these positions.”

The search for alternative means of food production based on environmental sustainability is gaining ground across regions. This worldwide search comes with a common characteristic: the need to involve rural people and particularly women, building on their local priorities and knowledge by employing the principle of agroecology.
Definition
Agroecology is a way of practicing agriculture or using technologies that do not harm the environment. It proposes breaking with the hegemonic rural development model based on large landed estates and single-crop plantations that benefit mostly agricultural businesses and entrenches social exclusion.
In family farming, agroecology manifests as a resistance to the current development model and its social, cultural, environmental, and economic problems. It opposes the lack of the farmer’s financial capital autonomy; and it symbolizes a resistance to the current agribusiness model.
Feminist perspective
Efforts based solely on agroecology may not be sufficient to solve all problems of women’s marginalization and invisibility. A feminist perspective is then crucial to analyze the norms associated with the idea of family as currently constituted as the perfect institution, as well as with the condition of women’s subordination.
In simpler terms, it is important to include in this debate a reflection on socially constructed gender roles to advance the emancipatory potential of agroecology.
Les féministes affirment depuis longtemps que le privé et le personnel sont politiques. Le festival Crear, Résister, Transform a créé des espaces de discussion permettant aux féministes d'aborder les questions relatives au corps, au genre et aux sexualités, et a exploré les interconnexions entre ces questions qui sont à la fois des expériences profondément incarnées et un terrain où les droits sont constamment contestés et menacés dans la société.
Le pouvoir des mouvements féministes repose sur la façon dont nous organisons et menons des actions coordonnées, non seulement au sein de nos propres communautés et mouvements, mais aussi pour des causes et aux côtés de groupes alliés œuvrant en défense de la justice sociale. La pandémie sanitaire mondiale liée au COVID-19 a mis en évidence les échecs du capitalisme néolibéral comme jamais auparavant, révélé les fissures de nos systèmes ainsi que souligné la nécessité et les possibilités de forger de nouvelles réalités. La reprise économique et sociale féministe doit être le fruit de notre travail commun à toustes. Cette édition du journal, en partenariat avec Kohl : a Journal for Body and Gender Research (Kohl : une revue pour la recherche sur le corps et le genre) explorera les solutions, propositions et réalités féministes afin de transformer notre monde actuel, nos corps et nos sexualités.

Décortiquons ensemble l'écosystème du financement féministe, de l'analyse critique aux expériences de première main et aux moyens pratiques de financer le travail féministe.
Climat, justice environnementale, terre et eau : la justice écologique et climatique a des racines profondes dans beaucoup de nos mouvements et communautés; des traditions anciennes aux visions futuristes, des villages écologiques aux campagnes pour mettre fin à l'extractivisme et à la justice en matière de santé, nous invitons à un éventail complet d'activités sur tous les aspects de la justice climatique et environnementale.
Militarisation, guerre et conflit : nous souhaitons mettre en lumière l'organisation, l'analyse et les expériences féministes souvent en première ligne de la réponse aux crises et de l'aide au maintien de la viabilité, de la communauté et de la justice dans les moments les plus durs de la guerre et des conflits prolongés.
Décolonisation : la décolonisation est au cœur de chacun de nos thèmes, mais elle constitue également un programme féministe clé de résistance et de construction du monde dans de nombreuses réalités coloniales et postcoloniales.
Réalités numériques et technologies féministes : nous nous réjouissons de pouvoir célébrer les incroyables initiatives féministes qui transforment les mondes numériques, remettent en question les structures de pouvoir des grandes entreprises technologiques et démocratisent la technologie comme étant véritablement par et pour les individus.
Justice curative : il existe une incroyable diversité d'approches en matière de soins collectifs et de justice curative. Dans le monde entier, les professionnels.elles du soin et les mouvements se réapproprient la justice curative comme un principe politique, un ensemble de pratiques, un parcours d'apprentissage, un mode de vie, et bien d'autres choses encore.
Member states and women's rights advocates and organisations are gathering at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 13 - 24 March for the 61st Commission on the Status of Women to address ‘women’s economic empowerment’ in the context of Sustainable Development Goal 5.
Whilst AWID is looking forward to physically meeting those of you who will be in New York, we want to engage with all those who cannot attend CSW, and as much as possible, amplify your voices in relevant spaces.

We are thrilled that AWID member Nayani Thiyagarajah is attending CSW this year and will take over the AWID Instagram. She will be available onsite to connect with other members for a possible feature on our Instagram. She will also explore possibilities of including some AWID members in a short film on the theme, ‘The personal is political’, a story of Nayani’s participation in this year’s CSW.
Nayani Thiyagarajah
Who is Nayani?
Nayani Thiyagarajah is a director, producer, and writer, dedicated to stories for the screen. A daughter of the Tamil diaspora, she calls Toronto home. For over 10 years, Nayani has worked in the arts and cultural industries. Her first independent feature documentary Shadeism: Digging Deeper (2015) had its World Premiere at the 2015 Zanzibar International Film Festival, where it won a Special Jury Prize. Nayani recently launched [RE]FRAME, with her producing partner Camaro West, a production company based out of Atlanta and Toronto, focused on re-framing the narratives around Black, Indigenous, and other people of colour through storytelling on screen.
On a more serious note, it should be noted that Nayani has a strange laugh, she's quite awkward, and her head is always in the clouds. She feels blessed beyond belief to create stories for the screen and play make believe for a living. Above all else, she believes in love.
