Protection of the Family
The Issue
Over the past few years, a troubling new trend at the international human rights level is being observed, where discourses on ‘protecting the family’ are being employed to defend violations committed against family members, to bolster and justify impunity, and to restrict equal rights within and to family life.
The campaign to "Protect the Family" is driven by ultra-conservative efforts to impose "traditional" and patriarchal interpretations of the family, and to move rights out of the hands of family members and into the institution of ‘the family’.
“Protection of the Family” efforts stem from:
- rising traditionalism,
- rising cultural, social and religious conservatism and
- sentiment hostile to women’s human rights, sexual rights, child rights and the rights of persons with non-normative gender identities and sexual orientations.
Since 2014, a group of states have been operating as a bloc in human rights spaces under the name “Group of Friends of the Family”, and resolutions on “Protection of the Family” have been successfully passed every year since 2014.
This agenda has spread beyond the Human Rights Council. We have seen regressive language on “the family” being introduced at the Commission on the Status of Women, and attempts made to introduce it in negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our Approach
AWID works with partners and allies to jointly resist “Protection of the Family” and other regressive agendas, and to uphold the universality of human rights.
In response to the increased influence of regressive actors in human rights spaces, AWID joined allies to form the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). OURs is a collaborative project that monitors, analyzes, and shares information on anti-rights initiatives like “Protection of the Family”.
Rights at Risk, the first OURs report, charts a map of the actors making up the global anti-rights lobby, identifies their key discourses and strategies, and the effect they are having on our human rights.
The report outlines “Protection of the Family” as an agenda that has fostered collaboration across a broad range of regressive actors at the UN. It describes it as: “a strategic framework that houses “multiple patriarchal and anti-rights positions, where the framework, in turn, aims to justify and institutionalize these positions.”

Construcción de economías feministas
La Construcción de Economías Feministas se trata de crear un mundo con aire limpio para respirar y agua limpia para beber, con trabajo significativo y cuidado para nosotrxs y nuestras comunidades, donde todxs podamos disfrutar de nuestra autonomía económica, sexual y política.
En el mundo en que vivimos hoy, la economía sigue dependiendo del trabajo de cuidado no remunerado o subvalorado que realizan las mujeres para ganancia de otrxs. La búsqueda del «crecimiento» solo expande el extractivismo, un modelo de desarrollo basado en la extracción y explotación masiva de los recursos naturales que sigue destruyendo a las personas y al planeta mientras concentra la riqueza en manos de las elites globales. Mientras tanto, el acceso a la salud, a la educación, a un salario digno y a la seguridad social se están convirtiendo en el privilegio de pocxs. Este modelo económico se asienta sobre la supremacía blanca, el colonialismo y el patriarcado.
Adoptar solamente un «enfoque de empoderamiento económico de las mujeres» es solo integrar aún más a las mujeres a este sistema. Ese ‘empoderamiento’ puede ser un medio temporal de supervivencia, pero debemos plantar las semillas que hagan que otro mundo sea posible mientras derribamos los muros del que ya existe.
Creemos en la capacidad de los movimientos feministas de trabajar para el cambio con alianzas amplias que atraviesen distintos movimientos sociales. Al amplificar las propuestas y visiones feministas, nuestro objetivo es construir nuevos paradigmas para economías justas.
Nuestro enfoque debe ser interconectado e interseccional, porque la autonomía sexual y corporal no será posible hasta que todxs y cada unx de nosotrxs disfrute de sus derechos e independencia económicos. Queremos trabajar con quienes resisten y enfrentan el auge mundial de la derecha conservadora y de los fundamentalismos religiosos, porque no es posible ninguna economía justa hasta que no hagamos crujir las bases del actual sistema.

Promovemos agendas feministas: Enfrentamos al poder corporativo y su impunidad por los abusos de derechos humanos trabajando con aliadxs. Así nos asegurarnos de llevar a los espacios de decisión política las perspectivas feministas, de derechos de las mujeres y de justicia de género. Un ejemplo sobre el que puedes leer más es nuestro trabajo sobre el futuro instrumento legalmente vinculante sobre las «corporaciones transnacionales y otras empresas comerciales con respecto a los derechos humanos», en el Consejo de Derechos Humanos de las Naciones Unidas.

Movilizamos acciones solidarias: Trabajamos para fortalecer los vínculos entre los movimientos feministas y por la justicia impositiva, incluyendo el reclamo de que los recursos públicos perdidos a través de los flujos financieros ilícitos (IFFs, por sus siglas en inglés) sean usados para asegurar la justicia social y de género.

Construimos conocimiento: Brindamos a las defensoras de derechos humanos información estratégica que es vital para enfrentar el poder corporativo y el extractivismo. Contribuiremos a construir conocimiento acerca del financiamiento local y global para el extractivismo,y los mecanismos de inversión que lo sostienen.

Creamos y difundimos alternativas: Movilizamos a nuestra membresía y a los movimientos imaginando de manera colectiva economías feministas, y compartiendo conocimientos, prácticas y agendas feministas por la justicia económica.

Feminists have long asserted that the personal is political. Crear, Resister, Transform Festival created spaces for feminists to discuss issues around body, gender and sexualities, and explored the interconnections of how these issues are both deeply embodied experiences, and simultaneously a terrain where rights are constantly disputed and at risk in society.
The power of feminist movements lie in how we organise and take coordinated action, not only amongst our own communities and movements, but with allied social justice causes and groups. This space provided opportunities for movements to share and strengthen organizing and tactical strategies with each other.
The COVID-19 global health pandemic has made the failures of neo-liberal capitalism even more apparent than ever before, exposed the cracks in our systems, and highlighted the need and opportunities to build new realities. A feminist economic and social recovery requires all of us to make it together. This journal edition in partnership with Kohl: a Journal for Body and Gender Research, will explore feminist solutions, proposals and realities for transforming our current world, our bodies and our sexualities.

Binta Sarr
Binta Sarr fue una activista por la justicia social, económica, cultural y política, y una ingeniera hidráulica en Senegal. Después de 13 años en la administración pública, Binta dejó ese camino para trabajar con mujeres rurales y marginadas.
Fue de este compromiso que surgió la Association for the Advancement of Senegalese Women [Asociación para el Avance de las Mujeres Senegalesas] (APROFES, por sus siglas en inglés), un movimiento y organización de base que Binta fundó en 1987. Uno de sus principales enfoques fue la formación de dirigentes, en relación no solo con las actividades económicas, sino también con los derechos de las mujeres y el acceso a los puestos de toma de decisiones.
"Las poblaciones de base deben organizarse, movilizarse, asumir el control ciudadano y exigir la gobernabilidad democrática en todos los sectores del espacio público. La prioridad de los movimientos sociales debe ir más allá de la lucha contra la pobreza y debe centrarse en programas de desarrollo articulados y coherentes en consonancia con los principios de los derechos humanos, teniendo en cuenta al mismo tiempo sus necesidades y preocupaciones tanto a nivel nacional como subregional y desde una perspectiva de integración africana y mundial". - Binta Sarr
Partiendo de la convicción de Binta de que el cambio fundamental de la condición de la mujer requiere una transformación de las actitudes masculinas, APROFES adoptó un enfoque interdisciplinario, al utilizar la radio, los seminarios y el teatro popular, además de proporcionar una educación pública innovadora y brindar apoyo cultural a las acciones de sensibilización. Su compañía de teatro popular representó piezas originales sobre el sistema de castas en el Senegal, el alcoholismo y la violencia conyugal. Binta y su equipo también analizaron la conexión crucial entre la comunidad y el mundo en general.

Desde la esclavitud hasta la colonización, el neocolonialismo y la mercantilización del desarrollo humano, la mayor parte de los recursos de África y del Tercer Mundo (petróleo, oro, minerales y otros recursos naturales) están todavía bajo el control de carteles financieros y las otras multinacionales que dominan este mundo globalizado". - Binta Sarr
Binta fue una de las integrantes fundadoras de la sección femenina de la Asociación Cultural y Deportiva Magg Daan. Recibió distinciones del Gobernador Regional y del Ministro de Hidrología por su "devoción por la población rural".
Nacida en 1954 en Guiguineo, un pequeño pueblo rural, Binta falleció en septiembre de 2019.

We welcome applications across the full range of thematic areas and intersections important to feminist and gender justice movements. In the application form, you will be able to mark more than one theme that fits your activity.
- Free Bodies, Free Spirits: all things bodily autonomy, gender and sexuality, reproductive health and rights, freedom from gender-based violence, freedom to live in safety, pleasure and joy in our diverse bodies, identities and communities, and much, much more.
- Resisting Anti-Rights: locally and globally, feminists are leading the way in resisting all forms of intersectional oppressions, including fascisms, fundamentalisms, and authoritarian regimes; we have a lot to share and strategize with each other about.
- Movements and Organizing: let us get to know each other’s movements. From navigation of power (internal and external) to protection strategies in the face of the repression of women and gender-diverse human rights defenders, from alliance-building to creative and successful forms of organizing, let’s learn and be inspired by each other.
- Economic Justice and Feminist Economies: this theme encompasses all feminist efforts to transform our economies, from challenging dominant extractive models and defending labor rights to embodying and living feminist economic practices and alternatives in everyday life.
- Funding/Resourcing Activism: securing much-needed funding is a shared challenge for movements across the world; let us together unpack the feminist funding ecosystem, from critical analysis to first-hand experiences and practical ways to fund feminist work.
- Climate, Environmental Justice, Land and Water: ecological and climate justice has deep roots in many of our movements and communities; from ancient traditions to futuristic visions, from ecology villages to campaigns to end extractivism and health justice, we invite a full scope of activities on all aspects of climate and environmental justice.
- Militarization, War and Conflict: we aim to spotlight feminist organizing, analysis and experiences often on the frontline of crisis response and helping to sustain life, community and justice in the harshest times of war and protracted conflict.
- Decolonization: decolonization is central to each and every one of our themes, yet it also stands on its own, as a key feminist agenda of resistance and world-building in many colonial and post-colonial realities.
- Digital Realities and Feminist Tech: we welcome an opportunity to celebrate the incredible feminist initiatives that transform digital worlds, challenge big tech power structures, and democratize technology as truly by and for the people.
- Healing Justice: there is an incredible diversity of approaches to collective care and healing justice. Worldwide, healers and movements are reclaiming healing justice as a political principle, a set of practices, a learning journey, a way of life, and much more.

Laurie Carlos
Laurie Carlos était une comédienne, réalisatrice, danseuse, dramaturge et poétesse aux États-Unis. Artiste hors pair et visionnaire, c’est avec de puissants modes de communication qu’elle a su transmettre son art.
« Laurie entrait dans la pièce (n’importe quelle pièce/toutes les pièces) avec une perspicacité déroutante, un génie artistique, une rigueur incarnée, une féroce réalité – et une détermination à être libre... et à libérer les autres. Une faiseuse de magie. Une devineresse. Une métamorphe. Laurie m’a dit un jour qu’elle entrait dans le corps des gens pour trouver ce dont ils et elles avaient besoin. » - Sharon Bridgforth
Elle a employé plusieurs styles de performance alliant les gestes rythmiques au texte. Laurie encadrait les nouveaux·elles comédien·ne·s, performeur·euse·s et dramaturges, et a contribué à développer leur travail dans le cadre de la bourse Naked Stages pour les artistes émergent·e·s. Associée artistique au Penumbra Theatre, elle a participé à la sélection de scripts à produire, dans l’objectif « d’intégrer des voix plus féminines dans le théâtre ». Laurie faisait également partie des Urban Bush Women, une compagnie de danse contemporaine reconnue qui contait les histoires de femmes de la diaspora africaine.
Elle fit ses débuts à Broadway dans le rôle de Lady in Blue, en 1976, dans la production originale et primée du drame poétique For colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf de Ntozake Shange. L’oeuvre de Laurie inclut White Chocolate, The Cooking Show et Organdy Falsetto.
« Je raconte les histoires à travers le mouvement – les danses intérieures qui se produisent spontanément, comme dans la vie – la musique et le texte. Si j’écris une ligne, ce n’est pas forcément une ligne qui sera dite ; ce peut être une ligne qui sera bougée. Une ligne à partir de laquelle de la musique est créée. Le geste devient phrase. Tant de ce que nous sommes en tant que femmes, en tant qu’êtres, tient aux gestes que nous exprimons les un·e·s par rapport aux autres, tout le temps, et particulièrement dans les moments d’émotion. Le geste devient une phrase, ou un état de fait. Si j’écris “quatre gestes” dans un script, cela ne signifie pas que je ne dis rien;cela veut dire que j’ai ouvert la voie à ce que quelque chose soit dit physiquement. » Laurie Carlos
Laurie est née et a grandi à New York, a travaillé et vécu à Minneapolis-Saint-Paul. Elle est décédée le 29 décembre 2016, à l’âge de 67 ans, après un combat contre le cancer du côlon.

Roxana Reyes Rivas
Roxana Reyes Rivas, philosopher, feminist, lesbian, poet, politician and LGBT and women’s rights activist from Costa Rica. Owner of a sharp pen and incisive humour, a laugh a minute. She was born in 1960 and raised in San Ramón of Alajuela, when it was a rural town, and her whole life she would break away from the mandates of what it meant to be a woman.
With El Reguero (Costa Rican lesbian group) she organized lesbian festivals for over a decade, fun-filled formative spaces to come together at a time when the Costa Rican government and society persecuted and criminalized the lesbian existence. For hundreds of women the lesbian festivals where the only place they could be themselves and come together with others like them.
Roxana would often say founding political parties was one of her hobbies. “It’s important for people to understand there are other ways to do politics, that many issues need to be solved collectively”. She was one of the founders of the New Feminist League and VAMOS, a human rights focused political party.
“The philosophical trade is meant to jab, to help people ask themselves questions. A philosopher who doesn’t irritate anyone is not doing her job”. For 30 years Roxana taught philosophy at several Costa Rican public universities. Through her guidance, generations of students reflected about the ethical dilemmas in science and technology.
Roxana’s favourite tool was humour, she created the Glowing Pumpkin award, an acknowledgement to ignorance that she would bestow upon public figures, through her social media channels, mocking their anti-rights expressions and statements.
An aggressive cancer took Roxana at the end of 2019, before she could publish a compilation of her poems, a departing gift from the creative mind of a feminist who always raised her voice against injustice.
2018: Apoyo a los movimientos feministas para que prosperen y desestabilicen
Este informe recuerda y celebra el primer año del nuevo plan estratégico de AWID, cuando dimos nuestros primeros pasos hacia los resultados deseados: el apoyo a los movimientos feministas para que prosperen, la impugnación de las agendas antiderechos, y la creación conjunta de realidades feministas.
Trabajamos con feministas para desestabilizar las agendas antiderechos, y logramos importantes victorias, peleadas y ganadas dentro del sistema de Naciones Unidas, cuando se logró la inclusión de lenguaje innovador sobre discriminación estructural, derechos sexuales y obligaciones de los Estados en una cantidad de resoluciones. Sí, el sistema multilateral está en crisis y necesita un sólido fortalecimiento, pero estas victorias son importantes, ya que contribuyen a la legitimidad de las demandas feministas, brindando a los movimientos feministas más puntos de presión y más impulso para promover nuestras agendas.
Ensayamos y pusimos a prueba distintas formas de construir conocimientos con los movimientos feministas a través de seminarios en línea, podcasts y conversaciones «en vivo». Desarrollamos guías de facilitación con educadorxs populares para recuperar saberes en pos de la justicia social y de género, incluso sobre un tópico tan aparentemente opaco como los flujos financieros ilícitos. Auspiciamos blogs y opiniones sobre cómo los grupos feministas obtienen fondos y recursos, y señalamos las amenazas que enfrentan nuestros sistemas de derechos humanos.
Dentro de AWID, pusimos en práctica y aprendimos de nuestro enfoque de liderazgo compartido, y relatamos la historia de las dificultades y tribulaciones de dirigir conjuntamente una organización global virtual. No tenemos una respuesta definitiva sobre cómo es un liderazgo feminista, pero un año más tarde sabemos que el compromiso continuo con la experimentación y el aprendizaje colectivos nos ha permitido seguir construyendo una organización con la cual nos entusiasma contribuir.
Al recordar este año, queremos agradecer a todxs nuestrxs amigxs y promotorxs, colegas y compañerxs, que han aportado su tiempo y han compartido su bagaje de conocimiento y sabiduría con nosotrxs. Queremos agradecer a nuestrxs afiliadxs, que han ayudado a construir nuestro plan estratégico y se han unido a nosotrxs para formular demandas feministas. No podríamos hacer este trabajo sin ustedes.
