Protection of the Family
The Issue
Over the past few years, a troubling new trend at the international human rights level is being observed, where discourses on ‘protecting the family’ are being employed to defend violations committed against family members, to bolster and justify impunity, and to restrict equal rights within and to family life.
The campaign to "Protect the Family" is driven by ultra-conservative efforts to impose "traditional" and patriarchal interpretations of the family, and to move rights out of the hands of family members and into the institution of ‘the family’.
“Protection of the Family” efforts stem from:
- rising traditionalism,
- rising cultural, social and religious conservatism and
- sentiment hostile to women’s human rights, sexual rights, child rights and the rights of persons with non-normative gender identities and sexual orientations.
Since 2014, a group of states have been operating as a bloc in human rights spaces under the name “Group of Friends of the Family”, and resolutions on “Protection of the Family” have been successfully passed every year since 2014.
This agenda has spread beyond the Human Rights Council. We have seen regressive language on “the family” being introduced at the Commission on the Status of Women, and attempts made to introduce it in negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our Approach
AWID works with partners and allies to jointly resist “Protection of the Family” and other regressive agendas, and to uphold the universality of human rights.
In response to the increased influence of regressive actors in human rights spaces, AWID joined allies to form the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). OURs is a collaborative project that monitors, analyzes, and shares information on anti-rights initiatives like “Protection of the Family”.
Rights at Risk, the first OURs report, charts a map of the actors making up the global anti-rights lobby, identifies their key discourses and strategies, and the effect they are having on our human rights.
The report outlines “Protection of the Family” as an agenda that has fostered collaboration across a broad range of regressive actors at the UN. It describes it as: “a strategic framework that houses “multiple patriarchal and anti-rights positions, where the framework, in turn, aims to justify and institutionalize these positions.”

The past five years have been huge for AWID.
We have contributed to some major victories, like expanding the women’s rights funding landscape with ground-breaking, far-reaching research and advocacy. At the same time, we have experienced some devastating setbacks, including the assassination of Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) like Berta Cacares of Honduras, Gauri Lankesh of India and Marielle Franco of Brazil, as well as the rise of anti-rights mobilizing in human rights spaces.
Five years ago, we committed to our movement-building role by producing knowledge on anti-rights movement trends, as well as on issues that feminists often engage with less, like illicit financial flows. We advocated side by side with our movement partners, strengthening young feminist and inter-generational activism, and expanding the holistic protection of WHRDs. As we close out the strategic plan, we are proud of our accomplishments and our growth as an organization. We end 2017 with renewed commitment, insights and learning for the continued struggle ahead!

Jacqueline Coulibaly Ki-Zerbo
Jacqueline was a pioneering Malian/Burkinabe feminist, nationalist and educator.
She taught English in Senegal, before being recruited in 1961 as an English teacher at the Lycée Philippe Zinda Kaboré in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Through her activism, she was involved in the popular uprising of January 3, 1966. Between 1961 and 1966, Jacqueline was also responsible for the trade union press, Voices of the Teachers. She was appointed as the head of the Normal Course for Young Girls (now known as Nelson Mandela High School) until 1974, and dedicated herself to girls’ education and advancing women’s rights.
In 1984 she was awarded the Paul G. Hoffmann Award for outstanding work in national and international development.

Lara Kruger
Lara fue una muy conocida y querida DJ de radio en la FM Motsweding, en Sudáfrica.
Fue una de las primeras conductoras abiertamente transgénero en una estación de radio comercial. Trabajó mucho para echar luz sobre los temas LGTBI.
El activismo de Lara comenzó a temprana edad, cuando defendía vivamente su derecho a vestirse y comportarse de una forma que le resultara cómoda y lo hacía frente a integrantes de su comunidad que todavía no entendían qué significaba ser transgénero.

Avec plus de dix ans d'expérience en finance, Lucy a consacré sa carrière à développer les missions du secteur lucratif et non lucratif. Elle a notamment travaillé et été bénévole auprès d'organisations à but non lucratif. Issue du monde trépidant de la finance, Lucy reste à l'écoute des nouvelles compétences technologiques du domaine de la finance avec passion. Elle a rejoint l'AWID en 2014. Pendant son temps libre, elle aime écouter de la musique, voyager et pratiquer divers sports.

La Asociación para los Derechos de las Mujeres y el Desarrollo es una organización feminista mundial, de membresía, que se dedica a brindar apoyo a los movimientos.

Desarrollamos nuestro trabajo a través de estas tácticas:
Influencia, incidencia y campañas
Hacemos uso colaborativo de nuestro acceso, poder, recursos y relaciones para influir estratégicamente sobre las políticas y las prácticas. Nos proponemos impulsar agendas feministas a través de nuestro trabajo con quienes tienen poder de decisión política, con financiadoras y con activistas en los espacios regionales y mundiales. Para reforzar nuestro poder e influencia colectivos, también procuramos influir sobre los movimientos feministas y de derechos de las mujeres para que pongan en lugar central a los movimientos históricamente oprimidos.
Convocatoria y conexiones
Utilizamos nuestro poder de convocatoria para facilitar el diálogo y pensar estrategias sobre temas clave. Conectamos a nuestra membresía y aliadxs entre sí, para que compartan e intercambien recursos, ideas y acciones sobre temas relevantes. Organizamos y facilitamos espacios en los que participan y se fortalecen diversos movimientos, espacios para imaginar y concebir nuevos futuros, para desarrollar tácticas de influencia efectivas y para crear juntxs agendas y procesos transformadores.
Solidaridad y construcción de puentes
Trabajamos para movilizar a nuestra membresía y a los movimientos que apoyamos para fortalecer la acción colectiva en solidaridad con causas feministas y con lxs defensorxs que están en peligro. Construimos colaboraciones de largo plazo, nos comprometemos en la escucha activa y la solidaridad continua. Trabajamos con defensorxs para construir conocimiento, redes de apoyo y solidaridad para la protección y el bienestar.
Arte y expresión creativa
Reconocemos el valor único y estratégico de las iniciativas culturales y creativas en la lucha contra la opresión y la injusticia. Trabajamos con artistas que le dan un lugar central a las voces feministas y a las narrativas de la comunidades históricamente oprimidas. En esta táctica emergente, vemos al arte y la expresión creativa como algo que nos ayuda a concebir un mundo donde las realidades feministas siguen floreciendo y sigan siendo celebradas.
Nuestras iniciativas
Nuestras iniciativas trabajan en las intersecciones de escenarios de cambio que buscamos abordar, de los movimientos que priorizamos y de las tácticas que usamos:
Promoción de los derechos universales y la justicia
Monitoreamos, documentamos y hacemos visible cómo están operando y aglutinándose lxs actorxs anti-derechos en los espacios multilaterales y apoyamos a los movimientos feministas, de derechos de las mujeres y por la justicia de género y sus aliadxs para contrarrestar esa influencia e impacto.
Construcción de economías feministas
Desde perspectivas como el extractivismo, la justicia impositiva y la rendición de cuentas corporativa, construimos conocimiento sobre el poder corporativo y su influencia; abogamos por que las empresas asuman sus responsabilidad así como por la distribución equitativa de la riqueza, y amplificamos las propuestas feministas para lograr economías justas.
Financiamiento de los movimientos feministas
Desarrollamos análisis accesibles y orientados a la acción acerca del estado del financiamiento para los movimientos feministas. Nos proponemos influir sobre las políticas y prácticas de las financiadoras, incrementar y sostener el financiamiento para el cambio social feminista, y apoyar las necesidades y estrategias de los movimientos.
Además del impacto que pretendemos tener en el mundo, AWID está expresamente comprometida con el fortalecimiento de nuestro propio aprendizaje y resiliencia organizacionales, para poder fortalecer mejor a los movimientos feministas del mundo.

Maria a consacré la majeure partie de sa vie à l’intégration d’une perspective féministe et de la parité hommes-femmes dans les activités institutionnelles et organisationnelles, ainsi qu’au renforcement des capacités.
Enfant, Maria s'intéressait beaucoup à l'art, à la communication, à la nature, à la littérature et à la justice, en particulier pour les femmes et les groupes marginalisés.
Elle a milité en faveur droits sexuels et reproductifs et était membre du Conseil national pour une éducation intégrale à la sexualité. Celleux qui l’aimaient se souviennent d’elle comme d’une « combattante passionnée et infatigable », résolument engagée en faveur des droits des femmes et des enfants
Priscilla Hon
Biography
Priscilla has nearly two decades of experience working in the non-profit sector with social justice organizations that worked on women and youth rights, conservation, peacebuilding and development. Her interests are in setting up progressive processes and systems that will help an organization live to their values and principles and thrive, and finding ways to support organizations and fundraisers to locate and secure the resourcing they need to do good work. . Priscilla joined AWID in 2018 as Resource Mobilization Manager and in July 2023, took on the role of Director of Operations and Funding Partnerships.
Priscilla holds an MSc in International Politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), a growing pile of books she is still trying to find time to read, and sits on the Board of Hodan Somali Community, a London-based charity.
