In September 2016, the 13th AWID international Forum brought together in Brazil over 1800 feminists and women’s rights advocates in a spirit of resistance and resilience.

What has happened since 2016?
One of the key takeaways from the 2016 Forum was the need to broaden and deepen our cross-movement work to address rising fascisms, fundamentalisms, corporate greed and climate change.
With this in mind, we have been working with multiple allies to grow these seeds of resistance:

And through our next strategic plan and Forum process, we are committed to keep developing ideas and deepen the learnings ignited at the 2016 Forum.
What happens now?
The world is a much different place than it was a year ago, and it will continue to change.
The next AWID Forum will take place in the Asia Pacific region (exact location and dates to be announced in 2018).

About the AWID Forum
AWID Forums started in 1983, in Washington DC. Since then, the event has grown to become many things to many peoples: an iterative process of sharpening our analyses, vision and actions; a watershed moment that reinvigorates participants’ feminisms and energizes their organizing; and a political home for women human rights defenders to find sanctuary and solidarity.
There are 47 questions in total, of which 27 are mandatory* and the remaining 20 are optional. The majority of questions are multiple-choice. We invite you to respond to all the questions.

Mexican WHRDs
The data from our tribute indicate that Mexico is a particularly dangerous country for defenders. Out of the 12 Mexican Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) we commemorate in this years’ Tribute, 11 were murdered. They were journalists, women’s rights advocates, trans* rights and social activists. Join us in remembering and honoring these WHRDs, their work and legacy by sharing the memes below and tweeting by using the hashtags #WHRDTribute and #16Days.

María était reconnue au niveau mondial pour son leadership extraordinaire au sein de la communauté des personnes handicapées.
Elle a représenté l'International Disability and Development Consortium (consortium international sur le développement et le handicap) lors de la négociation de la Convention des Nations Unies relative aux droits des personnes handicapées (2001-2006). Son travail a été consacré à la réalisation de l'objectif de la Convention, à savoir la réalisation des droits humains universels par, pour et avec les personnes handicapées pour un monde inclusif, accessible et durable.
Selon ses propres mots, son leadership consistait à « … servir la communauté des personnes handicapées, en commençant par de petites tâches que d'autres pourraient ne pas vouloir faire».
Elle est décédée le 27 octobre 2017 dans sa ville natale de Rosario, en Argentine.

Sus muertes ponen en evidencia la violencia que suelen enfrentar las personas LGBT en la región y en el mundo. Laura was a leading activist and lawyer who campaigned fearlessly for the decriminalisation of sex work in Ireland.
She is remembered as “a freedom fighter for sex workers, a feminist, a mother to a daughter and a needed friend to many.”
Laura advocated for individuals in the sex industry to be recognised as workers deserving of rights. She advanced demands for decriminalisation, including initiating a judicial review at Belfast’s high court in respect of the provisions criminalising the purchase of sex. Laura stated that her intention was to bring the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

Argentina has a long history of worker-run cooperatives and workplaces.
In 2001, the country experienced one of the worst economic crises in its history.
As a response to the recession and a form of resistance and resilience, workers across the country started occupying their workplaces.
The Nadia Echazú Textile Cooperative was the first cooperative created by and for trans and travesti people in search of economic autonomy and decent living conditions.
It provides work opportunities, access to social security, sustainable income and economic rights for the communities it serves.
