Nana Adjoa Sifa Amponsah dreams of “a society where young women graduates are proud to be ‘agripreneurs’, agricultural entrepreneurs, and where the smallholder farmer gets value for money”.

“In our struggle for equality, we tend to forget that women are also mothers (if they chose to be). The rights of mothers are also women's rights” says Aleksandra Miletić-Šantić, a lawyer and single mother of three children.

The Abortion Rights Campaign (ARC) - advocating for free, safe, and legal abortion in Ireland - has been an AWID member since May 2015. It is a grassroots, non-hierarchical, all-volunteer organization and is autonomous in its pro-choice activism.

Iniobong, an AWID member since January 2015, is an Irish citizen with Nigerian roots. She was forced to leave Nigeria after experiencing domestic, abuse.

Often known as a ‘poet of peace and friendship’, Caroline Nazareno-Gabis (an AWID member), a.k.a. Ceri Naz is a native of Pangsinan, Philippines, currently living and working in Vancouver, Canada. She is an award-winning poet, editor, journalist, public speaker, linguist, educator, peace and women’s rights advocate.

AWID institutional member, the Koogere Women Empowerment Programme of Engabu Za Tooro (Tooro Youth Platform for Action, EZT) is an indigenous organisation who works with communities in western Uganda to strengthen their capacity, using cultural practices to promote gender equality and self-reliance.

Ruth Acheinegeh is a “young woman in her early thirties, full of energy and cheerfulness in her encounters with those around her and with one leg affected by polio.” She created the North West Association for Women with Disabilities, the first ever women’s group in Bamenda focusing only on women’s issues.

Lina Abirafeh is Lebanese and Palestinian. For nearly 20 years she has been dedicated to working on issues pertaining to violence against women, specifically in emergency contexts and in over 20 countries. 

Marianna Karakoulaki is an AWID member since January. Living in a village at the Greek-Macedonian border, she has been covering the refugee crisis as a freelance journalist. In her work, Marianna tries to focus on feminist subjects aiming to give voice to those on the margins.

Ahead of the 2016 International Day of Action for Women's Health, on 28 May, we spotlight Sacred Women International, an AWID member based in Toronto, Canada. The organisation focuses on “creating a balance” and building the well-being of African, Caribbean, and Black Women across the diaspora.
