Keeping Abreast! Queer Womens struggles in South Asia

Dancing ladies at the AWID Forum

Queer Womens struggle in South Asia continue to face a lot of challenge in our contemporary society.

In the experience of South Asia, Queer movement cannot be separated from the issues of race, class, ethnicity, etc. Movement building among queer women must therefore go beyond the LGBT issues.

In order to respond to these challenges, it is important to address on the following issues- limited funding, cultural oppression, socially oppressive laws, family support, lack of awareness and sensitivity, lack of educational opportunities, violence and discrimination among others.

Future plans include a programmatic approach and advocacy to call funding agencies to be more inclusive especially for lesbians; call for solidarity/ shared struggles between women organizations; continue to advocate against discrimination, cultural oppression and sexually repressive laws; and expand the issues of LGBT to include class, religion, etc.
