Institutional Member: Sunya Ward Education and Training (SWEAT)
Sunya Ward Education and Training (SWEAT) was established in 2006 as a community based organization in the Kiteto district, Tanzania. SWEAT seeks to enhance education and provision of other basic social services to the Maasai pastoralists, Kamba agro-pastoralists, Kaguru peasants and other poor communities in the Kiteto district. SWEAT’s priorities are awareness raising, community participation and functional skills in literacy. Their goal is to have “an educated society, with access to basic social services and free from all kinds of discrimination and injustices”. To achieve this goal the organization has identified specific objectives including advocating for human rights and the inclusion of women, children, aged and disabled people. Their focus on these vulnerable populations has led SWEAT to establish and improve early child development centers, nurseries, primary and secondary schools and adult literacy classes. Within their institutional programs they support education for girls from disadvantaged families; promote understanding of land rights, land use management and acquisition; and create awareness around HIV and AIDS.
