Bali Declaration by Parliamentarians and Civil Society on the MDG Acceleration and the Post 2015 Development Agenda

Treaty makes it Illegal to sell Weapons if there is Risk of Gender-based Violence

Today, governments adopted the text of the first ever Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) at the United Nations in New York. The treaty, which prohibits the sale of arms if there is a risk that the weapons could be used to commit or facilitate serious violations of international humanitarian or human rights law, is the first ever treaty that recognizes the link between gender-based violence and the international arms trade.

Adoption of an unprecedented resolution at the UN to end the financial strangulation of human rights NGOs

Today, the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council gave a strong response to the increasing trend of curtailing - when not criminalizing - the activities of human rights defenders by limiting their right to access funding, especially when they come from foreign countries. The Council adopted by consensus an unprecedented resolution, introduced by Norway and co-sponsored by 62 States, affirming that “no law should criminalise or de-legitimise activities in defence of human rights on account of the origin of funding”.

Guatemala: Genocide Trial Begins: Be Part of this Historic Process

Today (March 19, 2013), the Genocide trial begins in Guatemala. Efraín Ríos Montt, along with his head of military intelligence, José Mauricio Rodríguez Sánchez, are accused of ordering operations in the Ixil triangle which included the slaughter of 1,771 Guatemalans displacing 29,000 and 1,485 acts of sexual violence.
