Broadening African Women’s Movement: Experiences from women living with and working with HIV and AIDS

In November 2008 over 1,900 women’s rights activists from 144 countries came together in Cape Town, South Africa to discuss The Power of Movements at the AWID Forum. The session was held during the Forum.

Presenters: Martha Tholonaoh, Siphiwe Hlope, Miriam Banda, Azola Goqwana, Shamillah Wilson, Eluby Jere

Language: English

Time: 1:07:05

This session uses films and a panel to share the stories of creative grassroots organizing by women living with HIV and AIDS in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi. Panelists highlight the great need to increase women’s leadership in local HIV/AIDS groups and create spaces for positive women to speak for themselves, and discuss barriers to developing this leadership. The session concludes with ideas for building links between women living with HIV/AIDS and other women in the feminist movement, as well as between HIV/AIDS groups and other social movements.
