A New Resource: Q-zine: The Friends, Family And Community Issue
"Too often LGBTI and queer Africans are written about as if we are our own people, completely apart from our straight mothers, cousins, brothers and friends. As if these people are incapable of completely loving and growing with us. So, to mark our first year of publication, Q-zine’s editorial team decided to collect and share the stories of straight Africans on their trans/bisexual/intersex/lesbian/gay/queer loved ones. This special issue celebrates love, openness, pain and patience.
We received many moving, funny, insightful and sometimes painful stories, from our straight loved ones and from LGBTI people themselves. The contents of this 116 pages special issue showcase some of these contributions. Throughout the magazine, you will read how it remains difficult for some of our loved ones to speak about us, as they still struggle to understand or accept our lives. From LGBTI contributors themselves, we are reminded of our remarkable ability to create new families when old families fail us or need time to understand.
This special issue celebrates love, openness, pain and patience. It celebrates the fact that we must, together, find ways to oppose the bigotry and violence that injure us all.Join us in celebration and help us widely circulate this special issue. If a story speaks to you in anyway, we invite you to use our suggestion box on Q-zine’s website to share you comments. q-zine.org
