A New Resource: CLADEM Informative Note N°5: "Contributions To The Debate On The Criminalization Of Feminicide/Femicide"

This document aims to analyze relevant issues related to the crime of femicide, the different penal typifications that have been recently enacted up to date in different countries and the results of this process.

"Thus, we try to make contributions on a topic that has been discussed throughout the region since the mid 90'st and that, given its proportions, generated the expectation of the need to prevent it and- if necessary- creating a criminal figure that would sanction this situation and repair the inflicted damage.

It is usual to set up high expectations on the creation of a criminal figure in order to properly punish those who murder women. Taking into account that for some governments it has become easier to promulgate laws instead of taking appropriate measures to prevent this crime, CLADEM made a call for a rigorous debate about the appropriateness or not of a specific penal type and the specified requirements.

In this context, CLADEM organized a Working Group coordinated by Susana Chiarotti and integrated by jurists from different countries: Carmen Anthony from Chile who is based in Panama, Juliet Montano from Bolivia, Guadalupe Ramos from Mexico, Rocio Villanueva from Peru in order to develop, each of them, a paper on this topic that were discussed at a meeting held in Buenos Aires in mid-March 2011..."
