Institutional Member: Awamaki
Every week we profile a different institutional AWID member. If you would like to be profiled here, please send your biographical information to membership@awid.org
Awamaki was formed in 2009 to support a cooperative of 10 women weavers from a rural Quechua community in the Andes of Peru. Awamaki collaborates with the greater Ollantaytambo community to create economic opportunities and improve social well-being. The vision of the organization is a productive and thoughtful collaboration between local and international communities in order to foster positive, sustainable development. Awamaki’s staff conceive of their organization as owned and increasingly governed by the people it serves, responding to needs defined by the community, not defining community needs. The organization aims to employ an energetic, fairly-compensated staff that reflects the populations it serves. Awamaki envisions a strong community economy in which women, the poor, the middle class, and small business owners can be full, productive participants.
