Individual Member: Tahira Noor

Tahira was born in Gilgit, formerly known as the Northern Areas of Pakistan.  This area is one of the most isolated and marginalized regions in Pakistan due to its controversial constitutional status. Presently, Tahira lives in Islamabad and works with the Women's Commission as a Communications and Media Manager. Upon finishing her secondary education in Gilgit, Tahira moved to various cities in order pursue her college education because there were no colleges for girls in her native city. She comes from a very conservative family background and has pursued activism because she sees her struggle as inherently linked to the struggle of the women around her for a better life. Tahira fought to secure her economic independence and learned that unless women are educated, trained and connected to economic opportunities it is extremely difficult to achieve empowerment. Her current work revolves entirely around promoting women’s rights. She frequently interacts with the media in an effort to ensure that women’s issues are given attention in the press. Tahira’s dream is to be in a position that allows her to make independent laws and policies for the promotion of women’s rights and gender equality. She hopes for a country in which women and girls are given equal share in property and assets and can exercise the right to choose their own partner. Tahira’s vision is to live in a society without discrimination on the basis of sex with regards to education, occupation and socialization. As a mother of two daughters and one son she hopes the society will acknowledge girls and their dreams and visions as it does those of boys.
