Individual Member: Hortensia Hernández
Every week we profile a different individual AWID member. If you would like to be profiled here, please send your biographical information to membership@awid.org
Hortensia Hernández has a BA in Chemistry and resides in Madrid, Spain. She volunteers at various organizations that work to promote and protect women’s and human rights, from which she gleans information that moves her to action. For the past year and a half she has begun to work as an online activist in order to make women’s problems more visible, and generate support and resources to better respond to them. Her interests have led her to launch several blogs where she collaborates with women from several countries, including Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt and Tunisia. One of her blogs, titled Heroines, is dedicated to make women more visible, as well as to create genealogies. The goal of her other two blogs, Mediterranean Woman, and Women of Two Shores, is to support women from Mediterranean countries. She also authors a newspaper blog focusing on the status of women, and another, similar, blog where she writes for young people. Through her blogs, Hortensia has suported for many international campaigns and published conferences which she considers necessary for the empowerment of women. Her blogs have had more than 140,000 hits. Hortensia dreams about supporting herself financially through her online work—which so far she has offered on a volunteer basis—, since this would allow her to increase their positive influence on women’s rights.
